The snow have melted and the sun has been shining bright in the past few days. Even though it’s still winter, there’s no excuse for not using sunscreen. My sun screen of choice for the year 2014 was Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA+++. It is raved about by many beauty bloggers and it has become my first ever Kiehl’s product.
Prior to coming to Sweden, I was only using Japanese sunscreens because they made the best light consistency with high SPF and UVA protection. Then I was exposed to Chanel’s sunscreen and realized that Western brands have improved their sunscreen to be similar to the Japanese standards as well. With my student budget, I can’t always afford Chanel and Japanese ones are difficult to get hold of. So I decided to try this Kiehl’s one instead.
Overall I think it is a good sunscreen. It has a light consistency as the name suggests, which means you can layer with your other skincare and foundation and your skin will not feel heavy. For me I think it is lighter than Vichy or La Roche Posay, however, not as light as Japanese ones as I find it still has some moisturizing feeling to it. It is non-scented, which means less people can get bad reaction from it. It contains titanium dioxide, which is the ingredient I’m comfortable to have for UV protection. The packaging is also clean, simple, and hygienic.
However, the disadvantages about this product are the price and the alcohol level. As with sunscreen, you need at least one tea spoon amount to cover your entire face per each application in order to get the maximum benefit from it. Also, you need to reapply every two to three hours. Therefore, you will run out of this tube fast. Hence maybe it’s not suitable for those who are on budget. And with the alcohol, this confuses me a little bit as in the beginning of application my face becomes a little bit shiny but after a few hours my face becomes dry and uncomfortable. However, this might indicate that it is good for those with combination to oily skin as I hope that it will not make your face becomes too shiny.
I do have some other notes on this product. Firstly, I don’t think this is a waterproof sunscreen. So if you plan to wear it during vacation, you will need to reapply more frequently. Secondly, it does contain parabens and might be tested on animals. And finally, it might confuse some people to think that it is made specifically for anti-aging purpose. But the truth is all good sunscreen products out there are already an anti-aging product in itself. So if anyone is considering purchasing this particular product over another that did not mention the word “anti-aging” on its packaging, I suggest you to reconsider.
Despite Kiehl’s being a US brand, this particular product does not appear on their US website. The sunscreen on US Kiehl’s is branded as Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50 with a totally different packaging. At the beginning I thought it is because the US has a different regulations on labeling the terms UVA protection than in Europe or in Asia. But, a quick glance at the ingredient list I’ve found that they are slightly different as well because the US one does not contain titanium dioxide.
My final thoughts is, if you are looking for a city sunscreen and you have enough budget and a slightly oilier skin, you should try this product. (Also if you don’t mind a non-organic product with parabens and might be tested on animals). However, after I ran out of this tube I will be moving on to something else.
